Deep Fishing Guide

Baits and when to use them

Quick answer

Bait is for improving what your cast pulls up; key hunts ignore bait entirely because key chances are fixed for every player.

Bait is the one upgrade-adjacent system in Deep Fishing that people overthink. It does exactly one job: change what your cast pulls up. It does not change key odds, and it does not make a short cast long.

What bait actually affects

<div class="tbl-wrap"> <table> <thead><tr><th>System</th><th>Does bait change it?</th><th>Notes</th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr><td>Which fish your cast pulls</td><td><strong>Yes</strong></td><td>The core purpose — bait biases the pool you fish in</td></tr> <tr><td>Key drop chance</td><td><strong>No</strong></td><td>Key odds are fixed for every player; bait is irrelevant on key trips</td></tr> <tr><td>Cast distance or depth</td><td><strong>No</strong></td><td>That is Strength and Weight, in the upgrade panel</td></tr> <tr><td>Mutation chance</td><td>Indirectly</td><td>Better fish in the pool means more to mutate, not a higher roll rate</td></tr> </tbody> </table> </div>

The three loadouts worth keeping

  1. Pond loadout — big body fish, high weight. You are stocking the pond, and pond income scales with what is swimming in it.
  2. Deep-cast money loadout — the longest cast you can throw with the best pool-bias bait you own. This is the everyday session.
  3. Key trip loadout — the wooden rod, no bait dependency, cast and stop until the depth bar shows a key.

Bait mistakes that cost real time

  • Taking a key trip with a slow rod. Bait cannot fix key odds, so the only lever you have is casts per hour. Wooden rod, stop and recast.
  • Treating bait as a luck stat. Luck affects rolls you already make. If you want more luck, that is an enchant slot, not a bait slot.
  • Ignoring the pool you are standing in. The best bait in your bag cannot beat fishing the wrong water. Check your depth band first.

Where bait sits in the whole build

  • Upgrades decide how far and how deep you can fish — nothing else gates water.
  • Rods decide how fast you throw, which is why the cheap fast rod wins key hunts.
  • Enchants decide your luck and weight multipliers, one normal and one ultra per rod.
  • Bait decides the composition of what comes up once all of the above is settled.

Get those in order and bait stops being a mystery: it is the last few percent, not the first fifty.
