Keys, temples and mazes
Keys drop from fixed odds no luck stat can raise. Farm them with the wooden rod, then carry them into the desert or frost temple and place the offering fish.
The key route is the newest part of Deep Fishing and the part with the most misinformation around it. Two things are certain: keys drop from fixed odds that no luck stat can improve, and the only thing you control is how fast you throw casts. Everything below follows from that.
The two keys
<div class="tbl-wrap"> <table> <thead><tr><th>Key</th><th>Reported odds</th><th>Opens</th><th>Notes</th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr><td><strong>Sand key</strong></td><td class="num">1 in 2,500</td><td>Desert temple in Dune Haven</td><td>The first key most players farm</td></tr> <tr><td><strong>Frozen key</strong></td><td class="num">1 in 7,500 → later reported nerfed to 1 in 2,500</td><td>Frost temple in Frostmire</td><td>Odds were adjusted after release; check the current figure in your session</td></tr> </tbody> </table> </div>
Both keys are described the same way by players testing the build: the chance is fixed for everyone from a fresh account to a level 300 angler. Luck enchants, gamepasses and bait do not move it. That is the single most important fact in this guide.

The fast-cast method (this is the whole trick)
- Equip the wooden rod. Fastest cast animation you own — that is its entire purpose here.
- Cast. Watch the depth bar on the right side of the screen.
- If a key icon appears on the bar, let it land. That is the drop.
- If it does not, press Stop and cast again immediately. Do not wait for the cast to complete.
Players running this method report finding keys in minutes rather than hours, purely from the cast count. A slow, powerful rod is the wrong tool: it produces fewer attempts per hour, and attempts are all you have.
The desert temple run
- Travel to Dune Haven and use the sand key on the temple door.
- Inside is a two-floor maze. The first floor can be mapped; the second is shorter and easier.
- At the end you reach a room with four pedestals, one per fish.
- Place the four offerings: Plesiosaur, Megalodon, Dune Worm Colossus, Dusk Fang Scorpion.
- The Chronus Rod appears at the centre of the room.
The frost temple run
The frozen key opens a shorter gauntlet in Frostmire: steps up to the temple, ice pillars that collapse as you step on them, falling icicles, a bridge that breaks behind you, then a snowball stretch that players describe as the least threatening part.
Then the pedestals — and this is where planning ahead matters, because you need the fish before you get there:
- Tusk Breaker Narwhal
- Glacier Back Ankylos
- Frost Air Plant (secret)
- Blue Whale (secret)
Place all of them and the frost rod appears on the centre platform. It is priced in the trillions of coins, so most players unlock it early and buy it much later.
Practical notes
- Farm keys with nothing equipped but speed. Bait and luck are dead weight on a key trip.
- Collect the temple fish first. Walking in without the offerings only means walking back out.
- Expect the numbers to move. Key odds were already adjusted once after release, and the developer has not published a table.
- Keep both keys' worlds straight. Sand key is the desert world; frozen key is the frost world. Mixing them up is the most common wasted trip.
- Rods and rod unlocks — where these two temple rods sit in the rod list.
- Secret fish and rarity — why the temple offerings count as secrets.
