Deep Fishing Guide

Rods and rod unlocks

Quick answer

The wooden rod is the fastest rod for key hunting because keys ignore luck — and the two temple rods (Chronus Rod, frost rod) are placed at pedestals, not bought.

Rods are the most misunderstood piece of Deep Fishing, mostly because two of them are not bought at all — they are placed. Here is what exists in the current build, what each one is for, and the counter-intuitive part: the fastest rod you own is often the best one for the job.

The rods that matter right now

<div class="tbl-wrap"> <table> <thead><tr><th>Rod</th><th>How you get it</th><th>What it is good for</th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr><td><strong>Starter rod</strong></td><td>You begin with it</td><td>Fast casting; with the right enchant, the fastest way to farm scrolls</td></tr> <tr><td><strong>Wooden rod</strong></td><td>Early-game purchase</td><td><strong>The key-hunting rod.</strong> It casts fastest, and key odds ignore your stats</td></tr> <tr><td><strong>Chronus Rod</strong></td><td>Desert temple — place four fish at the pedestals</td><td>The desert-world unlock; appears in the temple once all offerings are placed</td></tr> <tr><td><strong>Frost rod</strong></td><td>Frostmire temple — place three named fish plus two secrets</td><td>The newest unlock, and an expensive one: the rod is priced in the trillions of coins</td></tr> </tbody> </table> </div>

Rod skins are cosmetic only. Players running the current build are explicit that there are no pay-to-win rods — the Discord boost skin and other cosmetics change appearance, not numbers.

Why the wooden rod is the key rod

Keys are a fixed-odds drop: the chance does not change with your luck stat, your level or your enchants. Since every player has the same odds per cast, the only variable you control is how many casts you throw per hour.

That is the whole trick. The wooden rod throws the fastest, so it produces the most casts per hour, so it finds keys soonest. Players report farm windows of minutes, not hours, when they use it correctly.

How to run it:

  1. Equip the wooden rod.
  2. Cast, and watch the depth bar on the right.
  3. If a key icon appears on the bar, let the cast finish.
  4. If it does not, hit Stop and recast immediately — do not wait for the cast to land.

The two temple rods, step by step

Desert temple (via Dune Haven): carry the sand key to the temple door in the desert world, work through the two-floor maze, then place four fish on the pedestals — Plesiosaur, Megalodon, Dune Worm Colossus and Dusk Fang Scorpion. The Chronus Rod appears at the centre of the room.

Frost temple (via Frostmire): the frozen key opens the door, then it is a shorter run — ice pillars that collapse under you, falling icicles, a bridge that breaks behind you and a snowball stretch. Place the Tusk Breaker Narwhal and the Glacier Back Ankylos, plus the two secrets the temple wants — Frost Air Plant and Blue Whale. The rod appears on the centre platform, and it is priced in the trillions, so most players unlock it long before they can afford it.

Rod shopping rules

  • Keep every rod. Enchants cannot be moved between rods, and the cheap fast rod stays useful for keys forever.
  • Do not agonise over the mid-game. The temple unlocks are the real milestones; anything before them is a stepping stone to more casts per hour.
  • Plan enchants around the rod's job. A key rod wants nothing but speed; a money rod wants weight and luck.
